Digital Photography 1-4 Course Description
Students photograph, manipulate, and print a wide variety of quality digital photographic artworks to create a process portfolio (a collection of finished artworks, self-evaluations, idea sketches, handouts, notes, and critiques). They study photograph history, the elements of art, the principles of design, critiquing, and aesthetics (the appreciation of beauty). Activities include an introduction to the camera, the use of Adobe Photoshop software, and experience with digital printing techniques. If students choose to persue photography they may continue digital work in levels 2, 3, and 4. In Digital Photography 2, 3, and 4 students work on increasingly more individual and independent projects in all phases of digital photography, resulting in a varied and complex collection of art projects to be maintained in the art portfolio.
Students are requested to have their own 4-8 mega pixel digital camera or a digital SLR camera and be able to fund a reasonable studio fee for supplies for this class.
Students are expected to provide their own USB flash drive (or similar device subject to teacher approval) for maintaining working files as well as final products. All such storage devices will be governed by the FCPS standard operating procedure for student use of technology storage devices.

Visual Journal Project
Overview
In the level one classes, students will keep a visual journal. A sketchbook will be provided for each student as the basis for this “journal”. A visual journal serves many purposes. It will be part sketchbook, part diary, part notebook, part doodle pad, etc. This journal will go above and beyond images and words. This is a place for you to express yourself. It is an everything book!
The Process
A topic list will be available via Google Classroom (under the about tab). If students are having trouble thinking of a starting point these topics will provide "questions" to start them thinking about a particular topic. The students will create personal visual reactions in their book. Multiple techniques and media will be presented to the students throughout the semester.
The Grade
The book will be collected and given two main production grades per term. Students should be completing double page spreads (dps) as their “visual responses”. The chart below is a basic breakdown on how their book will be graded.
